Haverhill Ladies [Lionesses] Tag Rugby

Gt Yarmouth Beach Tag Tournament

Saturday 9th July 2011

9th July Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth

With the success of the previous week still fresh in their minds the Lionesses were determined to get off to a good start at Gt. Yarmouth but being drawn against the defending champions in their opening game meant it was never going to be easy. Some excellent play by the whole squad kept Haverhill in the game right to the end and a narrow defeat to a very good side was no disgrace. Having played so well in the first game spurred the Lionesses on and they cruised through the rest of the pool winning 3 from 3 to finish second. Yarmouth the second round of matches are also played as a pool so Haverhill found themselves in the Plate Pool with the second place finishers from the other groups.3 matches stood between the Lionesses and a second trophy in as many weeks. With the whole squad playing much better than they had the previous week the target seemed well within reach.A combination of incisive attacking play and focussed defending enabled Haverhill to record comfortable wins in the first 2 games of the trophy pool to set up a decider against the other unbeaten side.Unfortunately even with frequent rotation every one was tiring and a mixture of good attacking play and some full contact defending from the Billy Whizzers proved too much for the Lionesses. A narrow 9-7 defeat saw them finish second in their pool for the second time in the day to claim the Plate Runners Up Trophy.

Clacton Beach Tag Tournament Saturday 2nd  July 2011

2nd July - Martello Beach , Clacton

The Lionesses mixture of women, youth & junior players began the competition in a pool of 5 teams and after drawing their first match suffered narrow defeats in their other 3 pool games.  This left them in 4th place in the group which qualified them for the “Mug” Competition in the knockout rounds. The quarter final against the Titans was another close affair with the teams level at 6-6 at full time, fortunately the Lionesses “won” their first match of the competition on the toss of a coin to qualify for the semi final. The semi final against Colchester Girl Power was equally close with a 6 all score line again at full time – this time the teams decided that the result should be determined by rugby not luck and opted to play a period of sudden death extra time. With Haverhill defending close to their line George Foley intercepted a pass almost under his own posts and broke clear. As the opposition closed him down he span a long pass out to the left wing for Alysia Jenkins to sprint 30 metres to put the Lionesses into the final. Haverhill began the final brightly to claim 2 early scores against the Whelks. However the effort of playing 7 games was beginning to tell and 3 quick tries were conceded as the Lionesses fell behind. Fresh legs were introduced just past the half way mark to good effect and Haverhill were soon back in front 4-3.A moments loss of concentration just before the final whistle let the Whelks in for an equalising score – Haverhill again failed to win a game in regulation time and it was extra time again. The resilience shown right through the knock out rounds came to the fore again as the Lionesses absorb some early pressure and forced a turnover. A well worked move saw the ball go through 4 pairs of hands to create a Haverhill score and the Mug was won.

 Gt Yarmouth Beach Tag Tournament

Saturday 10th July 2010

Haverhill Lionesses followed up their success at the Clacton Beach Rugby Festival with another outstanding performance at Gt Yarmouth last Saturday. For the second week running they won all their group games and topped their pool, advancing to the main cup draw for the first time in their history.Despite being the only female team competing, the Lionesses cruised through their pool fixtures – even though the 30°C heat meant constant player rotation was a must, the squad played imaginative, attacking rugby against every team they faced.Victims of their own success, the cup competition against 3 all male senior squads proved to be a more difficult assignment altogether.Although all 3 games ended in defeat, the Lionesses were never outclassed and lost 2 matches by the narrowest of margins, leaving them 4th overall – their best finish since joining the beach tag circuit in 2006.This year has seen a significant improvement over 2009 and last week was a better finish than the week before, so the entire squad should be proud that their commitment and & effort all year translates into measurably better results in the competitive arena.

If any girls/ladies (current squad includes 14 & 40 year olds) fancy joining in with a non-contact form of rugby please contact the club for further details.

Clacton Beach Tag Tournament

Saturday 3rd July

Haverhill Lionesses played their first tournament of the year last Saturday at the

Clacton Beach Tag Rugby Festival.

Taking part for the 4th successive year, the 2010 tournament was the best yet for

the club’s girls (and a few lads).

For the first time ever they won all their group games and topped their pool with the 5th

best record of nearly 50 teams.

Unfortunately they lost their knockout semi final to Ghana (all of it) as the heat took its

toll but they played some great rugby and finished with a record of;

Played 5: won 4: lost 1: for 25: against 22.

Winning 3- 2 and 2-1 respectively

May 2007.

Haverhill Ladies played their first competitive games against Witham ladies and a mixed youth team winning 16 tries to 12 over 3 games. The team put all their practice to good use spreading the ball out to the wings to outstretch a well organised Witham defence time and again.  Scores from Haley H Gamble, Sorcha Lester, Sonia Tinkabel,  Ruth Snowy, Sarah Coops, Rachel Bob –Brown, Lara C Cookie and Jackie White.

The fledging Ladies' side have just had their first friendly game against Witham (where these photos were taken) and they are hoping to go to Thetford at the end of June on a 'Ladies Tour' to a Tag Festival
