A sign of how strong commitment in the youth section is this season was shown when a Haverhill U13/14s 7’s Tournament took place on November 25th

Having been let down by Royston at very short notice the Coaches decided that a 7s tournament was the way forward given that so many family and friends were there to cheer on the lads. After some careful selection, 3 Teams were chosen who on paper should have been evenly matched:

Roger‘s Rapiers - Dom, Francis, Nathan, Ryan, Elliott, Nial, Gareth

Mark’s Magicians - George, John, Olie, Tom, Callum, Jacob, Matthew, Bradley

Tim’s Tornados - Harry, Josh, Dylan, Ben, Dan, Toby, Henry, Brenton

The format was a “round robin” with the top 2 sides competing in a final with the other Team making up the subs for both sides, believe me they needed it by the time they got there.  Charles refereed all matches and was impressed by the quality of the Rugby played and the commitment shown by everyone.

The group stages produced the following results, all of which were very much far from settled until the last couple of minutes :-

Rapiers 17, Magicians 14        Rapiers 7, Tornados 12        Tornados 14, Magicians 14

In the Final (over 10 minutes each way!!), the Tornados triumphed narrowly by 14 points to 12 with a last minute try and skilful conversion. Whilst receiving his trophy Captain Josh said he was pleased with the overall effort that his side and shown and felt that, in the end, it was the right result.

Man of the match was Callum who seemed to be everywhere on the park all morning.

As normal our thanks go to all the parents and helpers on the day who’s support is massively appreciated

Haverhill 19 Saffron Walden 19

Haverhill Under 13 played their first home game of the season and came away with a hard earned draw against a highly organised and well drilled Saffron Walden team .

It was a game of two styles the Haverhill forwards dominating the scrum and break downs but the Saffron Walden backs spreading the ball wide to take advantage of some poor tackling and cover by Haverhill to score the first try to lead 5 -0 at half time.

Haverhill then fought back at the beginning of the first half and scored and try after some great forward play from Brad Aldrich  and new prop Dylan  providing the pass for Ben Brown to score.

Saffron Walden came back and scored twice from loose play by the Haverhill defence before themselves scoring two late trys through forward drives which were converted by Toby Pink to equalise the game.

Thanks to our sponsors C&M Construction, Safety Champions and Fire Prevention Products, and of course to the parents for organising the post match food.

This week Haverhill U 13 are away to Witham

Ipswich A 17   Haverhill 19

Haverhill Under 13 kicked off their season with a good away win at Ipswich

Weeks of summer training paid off with the team playing a well structures game forwards and backs combining well in loose play and set piece setting a standard that for the first half Ipswich could not compete with.

There was some good offensive tackling made by the Haverhill back mention must be made of Ben Simmons playing his first game for Haverhill for some tackles that were as strong as those in the Samoan Game.

Ryan Nash and Tom Jury worked well at the half back pairing and the combination of Tom Jury and other new boy Daniel Q at centre running some excellent lines kept Ipswich on the defensive for most of the first half.

Brad Aldrich playing Number 8 picked ball up from the back of the scrum and ruck effectively and ran in 3 first half trys for the team converting 2 of them for Haverhill to be leading 19 nil at Half time.

At the start of the second half Ipswich changed their game play and effectively kicked for position pinning Haverhill in their own half for much of the half and although Haverhill defended strongly Ipswich managed to pull the game back to within 2points by the end of the game.

Thanks to our sponsors C&M Construction, Safety Champions and Fire Prevention Products, and of course to the parents for providing the transport
